This course is based on the Venturing Ranger Award requirements and gives participants an exposure to some outdoor/high adventure activities. Powder Horn is a training opportunity designed to expose the participant to activities and resources necessary to operate a successful High Adventure program and understand the Ranger Award:

  • Understand the detailed requirements of the Ranger Award.
  • Help Venturing Leaders and Scouters to safely conduct outdoor activities of a fun and challenging nature.
  • Provides an introduction to the resources necessary to successfully lead their Venturers/Scouts through a program of high adventure.
  • Familiarizes the Advisor with the Ranger program so that he or she can help the Venturer to meet the requirements of the Ranger Award.

The course will include all of the Ranger Core Requirements:
First Aid, Communications, Cooking, Emergency Preparedness, Land Navigation, Leave No Trace, Wilderness Survival, and Conservation, As well as at least 10 Electives from the following list: Backpacking, Cave Exploring, Cycling/Mountain Biking, Ecology, Equestrian, First Aid, Fishing, Hunting, Lifesaver, Mountaineering, Outdoor Living History, Physical Fitness, Plants and Wildlife, Project COPE, Scuba, Shooting Sports, Watercraft, Winter Sports

(No participant has to participate in any activity in which they feel uncomfortable.)

  • Total Fee $250
    Includes training materials and meals

Learning Objectives

  • How to obtain resources and consultants for high adventure activities.
  • Knowledge of the BSA rules and regulations governing health and safety of outdoor programs
  • Introduction to the skills and certifications necessary to operate a high adventure outdoor program.
  • Knowledge of the Ranger and other Venturing awards.

Note:  The Powder Horn course is not designed or intended to make leaders experts or self-sufficient in any skill or skill area. The leader will still need to rely on knowledgeable, trained, and appropriately certified individuals to assist them in the delivery of a high adventure program.

Course Size

The course will consist of at least 32, and not more than 48 participants.
